On September 17, 2024, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors considered a resolution to support the creation of a Regional Transportation Authority (RTA). This resolution was part of the county’s broader legislative agenda of addressing its growing transportation infrastructure challenges. The RTA would have concentrated on improving transit systems and road networks to ease congestion and enhance residents' mobility.
The proposal sparked significant debate during the meeting. Some board members expressed concerns about the timing and financial implications of joining the RTA. A key argument was that neighboring counties like Spotsylvania, King George, and Caroline had already rejected participation in the RTA. Opponents worried that the resolution would increase the tax burden on Stafford residents without delivering clear benefits, especially given the current economic climate.
“The residents of Stafford are clearly pulling back in their pocketbooks and they're not spending as much money. So then to institute another tax on top of it after 30% tax increases on Real Estate property over the last three years. It's not the right time and I can't support it," said George Washington District Deuntay Supervisor Diggs.
