A significant winter storm is set to blanket the region with heavy snowfall on Tuesday, with accumulations reaching up to six inches in some areas, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore-Washington office.

Forecasters warn that a prolonged period of snowfall is expected, beginning early Tuesday morning and continuing into Wednesday. The storm is the result of a broad upper trough bringing Gulf moisture into the area, combined with cold air entrenched over the region due to a high-pressure system to the northeast.

Forecast Details

  • Timing: Snow will begin early Tuesday morning in southwestern parts of the region and will spread northeast throughout the day.
  • Accumulation: Most areas will see 3 to 5 inches of snow, with localized totals up to 6 inches possible.
  • Temperatures: Highs on Tuesday will remain in the mid-30s, ensuring a cold and snowy day.
  • Freezing Rain Concern: Areas in the southern part of the region may see a mix of freezing rain and snow as slightly warmer air moves in.

Midweek Impacts

The storm is expected to continue into Wednesday, bringing additional wintry precipitation. By Wednesday night, a second system will move into the area, bringing another round of freezing rain and rain. This second storm will be shorter in duration but could cause icy conditions before tapering off early Thursday morning.

Weekend Outlook

Forecasters are also watching another powerful system set to arrive over the weekend. This storm is expected to bring heavy rain—potentially over an inch—which could lead to flooding as rain falls on an already snow-covered landscape.
